Baboon Sanctuary

Baboon in the jungle

Baboon Sanctuary and Altun Ha Mayan Ruins. On this day trip you will visit the county’s most loved and well known Mayan city. This Mayan site is one of the most excavated and restored locations, and it is also the nearest to Belize City.

Its plazas are surrounded by towering temples, easily climbed. You will find yourself walking over smooth manicured grass and paths through this spectacular site where you can feel the ever-present Maya spirit. After trekking around an ancient home of the Maya, you will head to the tiny village of Bermudian Landing to visit The Community Baboon Sanctuary. This community runs projects of sustainable ecotourism that protects the habitat of the endangered Black Howler Monkey and other species. You will find yourself in nature and witness Black Howler Monkeys in the wild and wonder at the majesty of the rainforest.

What to expect

Your guide will meet you at your hotel in Belize City or the international airport and lead you towards the β€œOld Northern Road” to see this beautiful Mayan Temple of Altun Ha with green grass covered wide-open spaces.

Afterwards, once you reach the Baboon Sanctuary, you will go on a search for the many families of Howler monkeys in the rainforest. This guided walk on gentle trails in the forest is both thrilling and educational. This will be a Mayan ruins tour of archaeological history and wildlife all within a few miles of Belize City. Your guide will take you back at your hotel in time for happy hour and a late afternoon swim.
